Baseball and sports officials, including Chuncheon City Sports Council President Lee Kang-kyun, Kangnung High School Baseball Team Manager Jaeho Choi, Gangwon Province Sports Council Planning and Coordination Headquarters Ryu Yeol-sung, Gangwon Province Baseball Softball Association President Son Jeong-soo, and Chuncheon City Baseball Softball Association President Jung Jong-kyun, held a meeting at Chuncheon City Sports Council on the 6th to discuss ways to utilize the Uiam Baseball Stadium.
Although Chuncheon Uiam Baseball Stadium is an official stadium with a rare size and 8,000 spectators in the country, it is often neglected by baseball teams due to its damaged natural turf, cramped dugouts, and lack of locker room facilities. In fact, this year's weekend league was decided to be held in Chuncheon and Sokcho, but the venue was finally changed to Wonju and Sokcho due to concerns about players' poor performance and injuries. Participants said, "Although it is a symbolic place in Chuncheon, where major tournaments such as Bonghwanggi and University League were held in the past, it is regrettable that even middle and high school games are not held at present."
"When the Hanwha Eagles visited the stadium in 2013 to inspect the stadium, the stands were excellent, but the dugout and lack of shower facilities were pointed out as problems," said Lee Kang-kyun, president of Chuncheon City Sports Council. "We discussed ways to improve it, but it was regrettable that it was not implemented. It is even more regrettable to see the baseball stadium that is currently neglected."
Coach Jaeho Choi also expressed regret, saying, "Despite having a great baseball stadium that can host the national tournament, it is so heartbreaking when the game has to be played in the riverside." He then stressed, "If we have the necessary facilities reflecting the opinions of baseball players, it will not only be able to actively attract elite baseball and sports baseball, but it will also be of great help to the local economy."
